Spring Plant Sale Report
Trent Stremmel
I enjoyed the plant a lot. It was good learning experience. I enjoyed the care for the plants the most. The sale showed me how much is involve with just something that I thought would be simple like a plant sale. A lot of time has to be spent monitoring, watering and keeping the plants healthy. Even though we did not sell as much as we hoped I think it was still beneficial and a good event that should keep going.
I think that the plant sale did not sell to well because of the weather. There were a few people that I talked to that thought it was too early for a plant sale. They said they didn't think the weather was ready. Which they were kinda right because there was a lot of stormy and cold weather during and following the sale. I think the sale should be held a little closer to the end of May next year.
A possible idea for this year and following years is to donate or sell the leftover plants for cheap to the retirement home across the street.

Spring Plant Sale
The Horticulture class at Gettysburg High School is having a spring plant sale. The plants are being grown and sold in the greenhouses behind the High School. The address is 1130 Old Harrisburg Rd, Gettysburg PA, 17325. The sale will be held from May 1st through 6th. The greenhouse will be open Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm and on Saturday it is open from 8am to 12pm. Flowers of many colors being sold include NG Impatiens, Begonia, Alyssum, Vinca, Portulaca, Dusty Miller, Coleus, Spreading Wave Petunia, Marigolds and Dahlia. Hanging baskets include When Stars Come Out(blue, white, indigo), First Love(red, white), and Summer Celebration(yellow, orange, red). If any questions, contact JTimmons@gettysburg.K12.pa.us.
The Horticulture class was very involved with growing the plants. The class worked together to grow and keep the plants healthy. We filled the pots with soil, planted the plugs, pinched the plants, fertilized the soil and kept up the watering of all the plants. This taught the class a lot about raising and producing plants for selling purposes.

Begonia
Begonia
There are about 1800 species of begonia plants. Begonias are more of a under shrub plant. There are some species that can grow to 6 feet tall. They are commonly used indoors for ornamental use but also used outside during the summer. They are colorful plants and are popular to brighten up an area, whether its outside or inside. When used outside they can easily be planted in pots or in flower beds. When in flower beds they wont spread much. When growing begonias for the first two or three weeks that need to be kept at about room temperature until they sprout. Once they sprout they can be moved to larger pots and outdoors.
Begonias originated in Brazil. Charles Plumier founded the begonia plant in Brazil around 1690. Even though begonias were mostly found in Brazil, they were sometimes found in Mexico. In 1821, Begonias were found in Berlin Botanical Gardens when they got soil from Brazil.

Roses
Roses can come in many colors and styles. They also can be organized in many different ways. This includes dozen bouquets, singles and in boxes. When valentines day lands on a Tuesday it makes the roses more expensive and they are bought up faster.
Roses are very fragile so they have to handled with care and shipped quickly. They ship roses in refrigeration using airplanes because boat is to slow. The reason they are shipped from other countries is because the conditions that roses need are not good enough in the United States. The one place that is surprising really good at producing roses is Tyler Texas, the rose capital.
